元フリーランス&パラレルワーカーのアイです。最近、独立を考えている知人から、フリーランスの実情について聞かれる機会が増えてきました。
フリーランスは、いわば事業主。事業を請け負う立場にあるわけで、ネットやインスタグラムで良く語られるほど甘い現実ではありません。
スキルゼロ・人脈ゼロからフリーランスデビューし、酸いも甘いも噛み分けながら体当たりで突き進んで来た過去を振り返り、フリーランスのメリット・デメリットについて実体験を交えながらご紹介していきます。

フリーランスのメリット1：会社のしがらみから解放される
やりたくもない仕事を延々とやったり、プライベートを潰しての土日出勤、上司の愚痴を聞いたり、成果を出さなければというプレッシャー。会社員という雇われの身でである以上、こういった会社特有のしがらみは付き物ですよね。
その点、フリーランスは「業務委託」が基本であり、会社から見るといわゆる外部リソースの立場。面倒くさい人間関係や出世競争から解放されるのは、大きな魅力と言えます。
フリーランスのメリット2：好きな時に好きな場所で、好きなことで働ける
これも大きなメリットの1つ。フリーランスは、言ってしまえば「自分の強みを切り売りする」ようなもの。悪戦苦闘しながら自分の苦手なことに向き合う必要はありません。また、働く場所も時間も自由に調節が可能なため、スケジュール調整もしやすいのが嬉しいところ。人混みを避けて、空いている平日に悠々と休みをとり、平日休みを堪能することも可能となります。
このあたりはクライアントとの兼ね合いにもなりますが、アルバイトと違って毎月決められた時間働く必要がない場合も多く、シフト提出もなしでOK。好きなことの対価としてお金をいただくため、働き方の面ではストレスが少ないといえるでしょう。
フリーランスのメリット3：お金について詳しくなる
フリーランスになったら、避けては通れないのがお金関係。
会社員だった人は、社会保険を抜けて国民健康保険に入ることになりますし、厚生年金もなくなり一段構えの国民年金に。住民税は個人納付となるため、6月頃届く通知を元に自らコンビニ等で支払うように。
年度末には最大の関門である確定申告も待ち構えており、毎日の出費をできる限り経費として計上するにはどうすれば良いのか、請求書の作成方法は？など、否が応でもお金事情と社会の仕組みについて詳しくなるはずです。
フリーランスのデメリット1：収入が不安定
このように、魅力的に映ることの多いフリーランスという働き方。しかし、メリットもあれば、デメリットもつきものです。
フリーランスの一番のデメリットは、やはり収入の不安定さが挙げられます。
極端な話、会社員の場合は真面目に働いてもサボっていても、毎月固定の金額が自動で入ってきますよね。その点、フリーランスは結果が全て。
どれだけ頑張って働いても、納期が先であればその月には1円も入ってこない可能性もあります。また、そもそも案件数の大元であるクライアントや契約を勝ち取れなければ、収入は途絶えてしまいます。初期の頃は生産性も低く、時給換算すると500円程度のことも。
このような背景から、フリーランスは社会的に見るとまだまだ立場が弱いのが現状。クレジットカードの審査はすぐに落ちますし、不動産屋や大家さんも敬遠するため引っ越しもままなりません。コロナのような有事にあっては、貯金がないと家賃すら払えないなんてことも。万が一一銭も稼げなくてもしばらくは食いっぱぐれることのないように、せめて半年～1年分の貯金は確保しておきましょう。
フリーランスのデメリット2：我が身を守れるのは己だけ
フリーランスとは、自分の名前を売り、自分の名前で稼ぐようなもの。
常にクライアントに寄り添い、顧客第一の姿勢を取っていれば問題ないのですが、、一度何かのタイミングで悪いレビューが付いてしまうと、そこから這い上がるのはなかなか難しいのが現状です。
また、クライアントとの折衝がうまくいかずトラブルになっても、基本的に全て自分1人で解決していかなければなりません。もちろんパートナーの手を借りることも出来ますが、決断は全て自分。強い責任感と、自分で背負う覚悟が必要になります。
特に、金銭トラブルなどは訴訟に発展する恐れもあり、対企業相手では一個人のフリーランスになかなか勝ち目はありません。万が一に備え、フリーランス専用の保険サービスなどを賢く活用するのがおすすめです。
フリーランスのデメリット3：休めない
先ほど、フリーランスは結果が全てと書きました。つまり、体調管理も結果のうちということです。
会社員の場合、コロナになったり風邪をひいて熱が出れば、有給を取ってしまえばなんとでもなりますよね。つまり物理的に働けない期間も、会社が肩代わりしてお金を払ってくれるわけです。
その点、フリーランスは前述の通り、自分を守ってくれる盾など存在しません。体調が悪くなり働けなくなってしまえば、その分支払われる対価、自分の取り分が少なくなるだけ。もちろん、自分の時間を切り売りせずとも、サービスが勝手にお金を稼いでくれるような仕組みになっていれば良いのですが、事業が軌道に乗るまでは並大抵のことではありません。体調管理も仕事のうち、とはまさにこのことなのです。
まとめ：フリーランスは人生経験を豊かにしてくれる働き方
これを言ってしまえば元も子もありませんが。笑
フリーランスという働き方は、会社という盾を失い、自らの手でイカダを漕ぎ大海原に乗り出していくようなもの。どこまでも自由な分、責任と覚悟が伴います。
途中荒波に揉まれてイカダが転覆したり、海上のど真ん中で地図を失い、方向感覚がなくなってしまうこともあるかもしれません。そんな時に、それまでの経験と知識を総動員してなんとか道を切り開くのか、諦めてひたすら救助を待つのかは自分次第。
全ての人におすすめできる働き方ではありませんが、フリーランスだからこそ出来る人生経験は、私にとって今もかけがえのない財産となっています。
もちろん、最初から100%フリーランスとして生計を立てていくのは不可能です。最初は副業レベルから小さく始める「二足のわらじ」生活で、収入が途絶えるリスクを分散させましょう。フリーランスで得られる収入が大きくなってきたら、頃合いを見計らってそれ1本に絞るのがベター。
